What would Annie make of miso soup, that elixer so classic and yet so subtly varied? Here, I imagine how each new bowl would look to her with its umami swirls and sheen. Perhaps she'd see little iridescent frogs, and fish breath bubbles. and seaweed waving. For a little girl whose main treat was hardtack and hot water and a pinch of sugar, I would bet both ways on how she'd like it.
