Sailors are used to loss.

Amos was in one shipwreck, coming home on a streamship from Algiers. He captained the Hector, one of three boats plundererd and burned to the waterline at Pohnpei island in the South Pacific. He almost lost another ship to fire when a disgruntled sailor, returned to the ship after an attempt to desert, set one below the hatch...

Bit it was his last loss that hit home – changed his home life far more than any other.

On his last voyage, Amos had to deep-six a casket of Australian opals. Many of the crew believed that opals were evil and would curse the voyage causing some terrible disaster. Over the side they went.

Although he hid them from them, the crew had somehow learned he had them and made him throw them overboard on threat of mutiny.

Amos and Louise had used all their retirement savings to buy these gems, rare and coveted in the States. They lost his hope of a comfortable retirement. Amos, no shrinking violet from desxtruction, started a small sawmill instead.

We knew the opals had long been absorbed by the waters of which they were made. But gals' gotta dream.

Annie's Opals are our way of salvaging these opals. Why not make them ourselves? Why not share them with the world?

Amos and Louise lived to tell the tale. So why shouldn't Amy Louise look forward to a more comfortable retirement when you take them home?
